Tue Jul 25, 2017 12:42

PVT Alberic Maurice Blanchette, U.S. Marine Corps Reserves, K Company, 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marines, was reported “Missing in Action” on 20 November 1943 during the Battle of Tarawa. In November 2011, Chief Stone, while a member of the Department of Defense, submitted reports to JPAC using the RISC System noting that PVT Blanchette was not a match to any "Unknowns" in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl). In March 2012, the JPAC Lab requested a “short list” of possible matches to two sets of remains recovered by locals on Tarawa in April 2010, which were stored on the JPAC Lab shelf. PVT Blanchette was on Chief Stone’s “short list” of possible matches submitted to JPAC. Subsequently, the Foundation received a request for a Family Report from PVT Blanchette’s family which was forwarded on July 15, 2013. The Family Report confirmed that PVT Blanchette was not a most likely match to any “Unknowns” in the Punchbowl. One of the sets of remains for which the JPAC Lab had requested Chief Stone’s “short list” of matches in 2012 was finally identified by the Department of Defense as PVT Blanchette on 17 July 2017.
