Fri Sep 15, 2017 12:59

Assistant Cook Frank Louis Masoni, U.S. Marine Corps Reserves, Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marines, was reported “Killed in Action” by gunshot wounds on 21 November 1943 during the Battle of Tarawa. The Foundation later refined the Tarawa investigations completed by Chief Rick Stone at the Department of Defense after acquiring information and technologies not available at JPAC. The Foundaion, using the RISC System, listed ACK Masoni as a “Most Likely Match” to only one unknown in the Punchbowl. DPAA finally acted on Chief Stone’s original recommendations and began exhumation of the Tarawa “Unknowns” from the Punchbowl in October 2016. ACK Masoni was recovered from the Punchbowl and his identification was officially announced on 8 September 2017.
