PVT George Frank Patrick, U.S. Marine Corps Reserves, D Company, 1st Battalion, 8th Marines, was reported “Killed in Action” by shrapnel wounds on 20 November 1943 during the Battle of Tarawa. The Foundation later refined the Tarawa investigations completed by Chief Rick Stone at the Department of Defense after acquiring information and technologies not available at JPAC. The Foundation, using the RISC System, listed PVT Patrick as a “Most Likely Match” to only two unknowns. DPAA finally acted on Chief Stone’s original recommendations from 2011/2012 and began exhumation of the Tarawa “Unknowns” from the Punchbowl in October 2016. PVT Patrick was recovered from the Punchbowl and his identification was officially announced on 8 September 2017.
