PFC Earl O. Hockstedler was a 667 (Message Center/Communications Specialist) with the Head Quarters, Services and Weapons Company of the 2nd Marines Regiment,2nd Division led by Col. David M. Shoup. "2nd Marines" had three battalions at Tarawa, 1/2, 2/2 and 3/2 distributed across Red Beach 2 and 3. Hockstedler boarded the USS Zeilin at Wellington Harbor on October 17th and left Wellington on October 31st, 1943. Lt. Dean Hawkins led his Scout and Sniper team out of Hockstedler's HQ Company. Hawkins received the Medal of Honor for his actions at Tarawa. Hockstedler would probably have worked with or near Col. Shoup's command post at Red Beach 2.
