Japanese Hospital at Tarawa
Mon Feb 12, 2018 21:35

My father and 20 other Marines ended up inland on Red 1 on D-Day and isolated. Two Marines with him stated years later they were near a Japanese hospital. Trying to understand what gave them this impression. Does anyone know if the Japanese displayed some insignia/flag in order to designate a structure as a field hospital like I believe the allies did with a red cross? Can't seem to find much on the web about this.

Tom, This Tarawa photo may be of interest to you. The sign seems to indicate it is an aid station of some sort. Durk

Thanks, Durk. I believe that is ample proof that shows what the Marines could have believed was a 'hospital'. Gunner Leopold left Tarawa on the 24th stating he had 900 stills taken of the battle. I... more

Tom, perhaps this Marine on Tarawa posing beside a Japanese surgical kit will be of help. Where did you get the... more

Durk, Thank you for the photo. #31 and others have two sand-covered bunkers in front of the middle set of revetments going toward Red 1 so that could be a clue. I got wind of these aerials from a... more

Tom, would you please resend the link of the aerial photos to me. I fouled up several of them before I figured out how to open them. Some of them give great clarity of where my Company, A-1-6, landed ... more

Wendell, Sent you an e-mail sir. If you did not get it or cannot get at the pictures, please let me know. As I recall, I think the 1/6 moved east down the south beach at Tarawa on D+2. You would have ... more

Tom, I can only imagine how meaningful it is to research your father's movements on Tarawa, and I'm sure each new piece of information adds to the respect your have for the Marine's accomplishment in ... more

Yes, it has been an obsession. Lonnie had stated the whole group went into a 16-in shell crater including the amtrac after it was apparently disabled by a grenade thrown into the engine compartment.... more

You are welcome. I hope to see more as well. Battle ended on the 23rd and this is dated from the 24th. Interesting to note they were at 500' and that they used GCT 0150 as the time. Had not heard of... more

I too would love to see the other high res aerial photos taken during that flight. Zoomed in - I can clearly see the wrecked enemy planes in the ocean side revetments. At the very top of the pic can... more

There was a very large sand covered concrete structure on Red One a little west of the aircraft revetments. Perhaps the men saw a red cross sign at one of the rear entrances. Other smaller bunkers in ... more
