Just to get ahead of the game this time...

History Flight is grateful to the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency for the release of the identification of Pfc. John W. Mac Donald of Bourne, Mass. on June 15, 2018.

Mac Donald was one of scores of Marines recovered in 2015 and 2016 by nonprofit History Flight, Inc., which has been actively researching and recovering MIAs from the Tarawa battlefield since 2007. History Flight ( is a 501(c)3 nonprofit founded by Mark Noah.

Pfc. Mac Donald was located in Grave #22, 8th Marine Cemetery #2, aka Cemetery 27, on June 5, 2015, with archaeologist Kristen N. Baker in charge of the excavation. History Flight had been aware that Mac Donald's remains were recorded as having been buried in Cemetery 27 since 2008, and located the cemetery in March 2015.

At the time of Pfc. Mac Donald's recovery, History Flight had accomplished all of its work on Tarawa and elsewhere strictly through privately raised funds. Following the discovery of Cemetery 27, the organization began entering into public-private contracts with the DPAA to continue recovering the remaining hundreds of MIAs on Betio.

Per History Flight's agreement with the DPAA, after exhuming, processing, and making a provisional identification of Pfc. Mac Donald's remains, they were turned over to the DPAA for official identification in the Central Identification Laboratory in Hawaii.

No other organizations, entities, or individuals were involved in the recovery of Pfc. Mac Donald.
