Hi Dona, hi all,
The force designated to take Tarawa was the 2d Marine Division. Each division has its own tank battalion, in this case the 2d Tank Battalion. At Tarawa, two companies of light tanks were assigned the task of supporting the divisional infantry: B and C Companies.
Prior to the Tarawa operation, it was decided to reinforce the second Tk Bn with a company of medium tanks. In this case, C Company 1st Corps Medium Tank Battalion was "loaned" to the 2d Tk Bn.
That's why there was two C Companies at Tarawa.

RE- Brent A. Perterson: only about 12men from C Co. (Medium) were sent to Wellington for a rehearsal and see what depth of water medium tanks could ford. The rest of the company sailed from New Caledonia aboard the USS Ashland (LSD-1).

Best regards

Romain
