Thank you so much! You are right, it is an unusual name and I am thinking that this must be the gentleman. (The middle initial even matches!)

My mother was a second generation Japanese American (Nisei) from the Big Island not far from Camp Tarawa. Her parents ran a general store and my mother remembers lots of Marines coming into the store on leave. She told me how her mother (my grandmother) used to take the marines back into the kitchen and feed them. My grandmother would comment on how young they all were and how she hoped that if her sons were far away from home someone would give them a home cooked meal. I don't think it ever occurred to her that those Marines were going off to fight the Japanese. She just saw young men about to go in harms way.....

    Robert, This may be the Marine you are looking for as it is an uncommon name. Jimmie was in A 1/18. He has passed on. There is an obituary at this site. Robert appears to have had many children.... more
