I had the pleasure of spending a weekend with Bob and his lovely wife Shirley in Reno, Nevada back in 2002. We met here on Tarawa Talk and spent years talking. He was a tough little Marine whose stories about Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Saipan, and Tinian were very insightful and on point. Bob's memory was outstanding.

I also miss Vietnam veteran Dave Pena. He served under Col. Bale. I will never forget his stories about the flame throwing tanks and his slogan Semper Flames! Dave got me Maj. Mike Ryan's autograph!

Yes, thank you Jon. I was able to meet and speak with real WWII veterans because of your website. I even spoke with men shown in father's photographs like Mike Boyle. It was great to get to know Mike and his wife. Mike was the first enlisted man to be the President of the Second Marine Division Association. I spoke with a few Marines who went to Tarawa on the USS Maryland and were in my father's company. Frank Lorbecki had great stories about my father in New Zealand, the USS Maryland, and Tarawa.

It was a little shaky here at the start for me when Les Groshong denied that my father was with the Second Marine Division and some of my other stories but the overwhelming evidence that I provided proved him wrong. Howard Frost offered me many words of encouragement and to not worry about Les. All in all, your website has been a great experience. I remember when Bob and Shirley helped this site out. They are sorely missed. I also remember Mr. W. Scott very well. I was also very sad to recently see the loss of Col. Ed Bale. So many Marines used to post here, and sadly they are now gone.

It has been great to see the recent efforts to bring the Marines left at Tarawa home. It looks like such hard work but I am extremely happy that it is being done.

Please keep up the great work Jon. Your father would be proud. Happy Easter.

Thanks for the kind words. My next project is to get all of TT in an archive on the website. I started all this for fun to organize research and to find members of my dad's outfit. I found Bill... more

I want to also thank all those WWII Veterans who have and if any still are around continuing to contribute if not directly or though others as they tell the story. I was very happy a couple of years... more

What wire section was your father in? My father was the communication chief for H&S/2/8 during the Saipan and Tinian operations. They had wire and radio sections.
