back as a kid, and discouraged it later within her own family. I'm sure that was often true with some of the names kids gave each other. My mother hated being called "El" with the regional German accent she hated, and I know her brothers called my Aunt "Louie" until they died instead of Louise. Of course maybe some were just getting even for variations like "Wad" for Walter, and "Eke" for Emil! We even learned to say "Uncle Eke," for example, while my Aunt Nell hated that so much she called him "Bill," since his second name was William. She clearly disliked being called "Nellie," too. And I must admit, I've always thought Adelia was one of the prettiest names!

  • Virgil Obermeyer did at a family reunion about 5-10 years ago. I asked him who Delie was and he told me that was her family name. That was a surprise for both Virgil and me
