In Garrett's account he states: "The Kid was entirely unknown to either of them" The them being Poe and McKinney. Poe also had stated that he had never seen or met Pete Maxwell either.

In Nolan's "The West of Billy the Kid" on page 280, Nolan writes....."Poe and McKinney were complete strangers to Fort Sumner. They knew nothing about the people and even less about the Kid"

Also mentioned is that McKinney came to the Seven Rivers area in the late 1870's and was involved with the Seven Rivers Warriors. All this doesn't necessarily mean that McKinney had ever actually met Billy but it does put him close enough that it could have happened. And if it did, wouldn't Billy have recognized McKinney on the porch ?

Don't know about McKinney / Garrett being in the hog raising business together cause I don't remember ever reading that.

I also love the movie Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid! When I was younger I thought it moved too slowly, but the older I get the more I appreciate Peckinpah's masterpiece.
