walk past them" because he wasn't coming from across the parade ground as Poe and Garrett later claimed.* He was coming from Paulita's bedroom, walking along the wide wooden portal (porch) on that side of the Maxwell house.

Remember too that Kid was disguised as a Mexican--he'd grown out his beard and mustache and darkened his hair and skin. That, combined with his perfect, unaccented Spanish, convinced Poe at least that he was simply one of Pete Maxwell's employees and Poe writes about his surprise when this "Mexican" got so spooked at the sight of him.

McKinney, of course, would have realized the "Mexican's" true identity at the first "Quien es?" and was probably near to peeing himself with terror for fear Kid would recognize him.

* I forget which historian(s) point out that Garrett and Poe obviously had agreed to lie about the direction Billy was coming from in order to protect Paulita's reputation; IMO they also lied about Billy carrying his .41 with him on that last walk along the portal in order to protect Garrett's.

egos. I had high hopes for Weddle's little book, though, and indeed it was going along just peachy until I got to page 8, when IMO it crashes and burns with the bald assertions that the Kid's "taste... more
