A Strange Day in July

By: Trevor

“Sara, you look really beautiful tonight,” Evan said as he sat on a rock by the lake.
“Thanks, you look handsome,” Sara replied as she blushed deep red.
Evan and Sara had been friends for a long time, but this was the first time they had ever gone on a date. It was Sara who had suggested the lake. She thought it would be romantic. Out of nervousness, Evan started skipping rocks across the calm, blue lake. Boom! Bang! Splash! To Evan’s surprise one of the pebbles came skipping back. Or, at least that is what it looked like.
Suddenly, a fish jumped out of the water and made a big splash. The fish was beautifully colored. It had blue, green, and purple scales. In its mouth was the last rock that Evan had thrown. Evan thought it must be a magical fish.
“Sara, are you watching this?” asked Evan.
Sara was sitting on the rock next to Evan, staring in disbelief. “Oh my!” Sara exclaimed. “Evan, is that fish holding your rock in its mouth?”
“Sara, yes, that fish, that beautiful fish, is carrying my rock in his mouth.”
They saw the fish swimming closer to them. The rock still in its mouth. The fish’s scales sparkled in the sunlight. The fish swam up onto the land and grew legs and started walking towards the young couple. Evan and Sara were shocked. Then the fish gently dropped the rock by Sara’s foot. Then it went back into the water and swam away. Evan was right about the fish being magical. Sara now had a special rock that was strangely colored blue, purple, and green. This was a strange day in July that Evan and Sara will always remember.
