I think that is gradually changing. I think more and more couples are recognizing from the get go that life CAN change enough that the BEST answer for them will someday be a divorce. Hence the growth of things like prenup contracts. IMO recognizing that divorce is a fact of marriage in the majority of cases is the first step in a society learning to integrate it into its standards...
It used to be that divorcees were horribly stigmatized. Now, no one even thinks twice when someone says that they are divorced. Social expectations have changed.
I think the institution of marriage is gradually evolving into something a bit more fluid and flexible than the rigid standards of the old Roman Catholic church.
It would not surprise me at all to see set length marriages in my lifetime, where couples marry for a set number of years with the option to re-up at that time if they both want to.
