Uru HammerI Appreciate Your Response...Thu Feb 10, 2011 5:29pm184.108.40.206I see what you're saying, but I look at it like this:
With nuclear power, there is a large area of common ground for almost everybody. Nobody wants nuclear waste to simply be discarded in landfills, for example. But there are also issues where people are pretty evenly split. For example, should a town build a nuclear power plant or a coal power plant? The townsfolk could well be divided on the issue.
Likewise with the abortion debate. I brought up science to explain why the pro-choice position is defensible in a moral sense. Science tells me that there is no way that a 14 week old fetus has a mind, a personality, or awareness. Without those things, it is not a person. As such, there is no moral issue with terminating the fetus before it becomes a person.
I understand that not everyone agrees that my reasoning above is enough to provide a moral basis for abortion. However, arguments to the contrary are religious in nature. They have to be. And as such, they fall under the freedom of religion. That is why I support the pro-choice position. For me, it is an issue of the freedom of religion, over and above any reasoning that defends it as an issue of privacy.
Now, if science suddenly reversed its position - if evidence came to light, and the scientific community proclaimed that fetuses bear a measurable spark of awareness from the moment of conception... well, then my position would change immediately, because I would not longer be able to find a moral basis for abortion.
- One of the problems with your argument shadow, Thu Feb 10 1:28pmis that it is only a scientific argument, and by definition is amoral. Science alone cannot define what is good or bad behavior. If you're unable to apply it to the issue of what a fetus is, apply it ... more

- and, the disposition... donk, Thu Feb 10 6:27pmof a fetus is nobody's business except the owner of the body in which it is.
