In other words, it cannot be that "there was never any question ..." about sexual orientation, because there have been and still are questions about this very thing (as you point out in another post). Therefore the attempt to show there is irony in the situation never gets off the ground as it has not been established that these are analogous situations. Whether orientation as volitional is correct isn't relevant. Unless it can be demonstrated that it isn't possible, the analogy fails.
I understand why the comment is made in the first place, though. It is obviously the position of the author that orientation is analogous to skin color. However, it is obviously the position of those purportedly denying someone their "rights" (which is an entirely different can of worms) that the situation is *not* analogous.
