Now I might be considered odd, often was in the past. But so many of the basic ideas in Christianity, Islam and Judaism make no sense to me. So it is hard to find that common ground.
I was reading a poll given to modern Pagans. We don't share a lot with the monolithic religions. While many of us think we should respect the gods, fewer of us or likely to do regular prayer to our gods. It is just not required. We can ask for help, but most of us see it as our responsibility rather than the gods' responsibility to take care of the problems of life. The gods may answer prayer,or they may not. They may play a role in or lives or they may not depending on what suits them. We don't consider them to be at our beck and call.
We don't see our gods as separate from creation, but we do see everything as sacred, having some of the deity within. We think it is impossible to ever be separated from our gods. We have many different opinions about what are gods are in the first place. Pagans never had uniform beliefs or practices when it came to their religions. It always varied from people to people and area to area and person to person.Inmost cases orthodoxy and heresy were concepts that were never even considered among pagans. The only exceptions might be in state religions.
But religion was mostly local, not state wide or kingdom wide or empire wide. Remember with many different gods and goddesses coming together as peoples came together, most of us had our personal gods, as well as our tribal gods, or town and city gods.So everyone was not in a rush to worship the same god most of the time. So if we went to another kingdom we might easily pay a visit to the temple of the local god and leave an offering as a matter of courtesy, without getting our personal god upset.
If you are interested n continuing this conversation, perhaps you could bring this last post of mine up to the top of the forum and we could continue. I am afraid that I have already used up my two new posts of the day.
