It is every young woman's lifelong ambition to have kids (and their peers agree!). They spend their youth playing house, playing with dolls, and pushing around toy baby strollers "just like mom". And as long as their kids are marginally better off than their neolithic ancestors were, why would they not keep having more?

This reminds me of one of my favorite songs from the early 90s: LaTour - People are Still Having Sex (this "safe" thing is not working). It was released in 1991 when the world population was only 5.3 billion. Keep in mind here that I am NOT casting aspersions on the character of women here, men are also party to the problem, but the song certainly points to a consistent pattern.
