Concepts that have been pre-established, and held to with religious faith are very difficult to change.

I think this is because if we question a long held belief that is one part of a faith, then we call into question all of the others.

So, if we want to accept that God didn't create the world in 7 days, what other actions of God become subject to doubt?

I would agree that it would be easier for religion to use science instead of fighting it. But changing entrenched religious concepts is VERY difficult. And it is the kind of things that schisms are made of.
