But was he required to attack the USSR at that time?
It was whenever his psychotic mind said to do it.

IMO he certainly miscalculated his nations ability to fight a two front war, especially through winter.
"Two front war"? Where was the second (Western) front? There was none. Western Europe was under German control.

So, knowing that he LOST because of that miscalculation, what would he do DIFFERENTLY?
He might have stockpiled petroleum to hold until he captured Soviet oil fields.

IMO he may have been a megalomaniac, but he was not STUPID. He would not have gotten as far as he did being stupid.
Oh, yes, he was very stupid. He ignored all of the advice of his general staff and imagined that he knew something about strategy. His general staff was dead set against fighting the USSR. They WERE smart an realized what the likely consequences would be. They knew how dependent Germany was on raw materials from USSR. Only a profoundly stupid person would attack his best ally and biggest supplier of raw materials.

He made a colossal tactical and strategic blunder. But having the opportunity to re-do it, I have no doubt he would have tried something different.
I have no doubt that he would have done essentially the same thing. Perhaps he would have stockpiled for a while, but he HAD to attack the USSR because of his deep psychosis.
