discourage bad behavior. Punishment must be closely applied, otherwise the child will learn that when someone behaves in a way that is not to their approval, punishment based on the application of pain will be the child's response. Withholding positive rewards (i.e. things that the child holds as desirable, like watching television for example) is a healthier form of punishment.

    Rewards work for encouraging GOOD behavior. They do NOT discourage BAD behavior. Only punishment will prevent recurrence of bad behavior. DFM
