I suppose that we have a misunderstanding here. For my wife and myself, punishment did not mean physical, but a combination of "the look", verbal correction, plus forfeiture of privileges & money.

If you consider those privileges to be rewards for being good, then you misunderstand me entirely. They are not. We never told our kids that if you don't fight, we will buy you ice cream, etc. That is rewarding bad behavior. Instead, we had a long list of enjoyable things that our kids were usually doing, and we cancelled them when our kids misbehaved.

We may have a semantic difficulty here.
