If it's for carry purposes...

...I can confidently recommend the Kahr P9, a compact 9mm or possibly it's even smaller stablemate, the PM9. I have the former, and it's my every day carry pistol. It's (trigger cocking) double-action-only, but the trigger is smooth and predictable. It's no target pistol, but is accurate enough for defense purposes, cycles with perfect reliability, and is easy to conceal. It holds 7 rounds in the magazine, plus one in the chanber for 8 rounds w/o reloading. THis allows it to be comfortable to carry in most circumstances. I switched to it from my previous carry 9mm, a Smith & Wesson 908, in order to simplify the operation and keep a consistent trigger feel for every shot.

The PM9 is smaller still (with one less round capacity), but is also less pleasant to shoot (harsher recoil)...which can discourage practice at the range. I don't know your wife, so I don't know if that would be an issue.

There are lots of pistols in this category (Glock, S&W, Kel-Tec, etc), but I recommend the Kahr based on direct experience. THey're slightly more expensive than most in this calss, but not enormously so, and the quality is obvious from the moment you unbox it.

If it's for other than carry purposes, I'd have different suggestions...
