...every Theist that I've ever heard comment on this has said that "divine punishment" wasn't why THEY behaved themselves PERSONALLY, but that a lot of OTHER PEOPLE need it in order to behave.

It's always the OTHER guy who NEEDS it. Never them.

You never hear anyone say "Yeah, I was gonna go on a killing spree, but then I remembered that god would punish me for that for all eternity, so I decided to just watch TV instead".

There's a false belief among many Theists that, if not for a divinely imposed morality, people would feel free to rape and murder and steal and pillage.

Yet millions upon millions of people live good, moral lives WITHOUT a fear of divine punishment. Like me. As I said, I'm not perfect. But I know what's right and what's wrong, and I try to behave myself, and have never raped or murdered or pillaged. And all without fear of divine retribution.
