I think gold is an excellent choice if you have only modest amounts to invest. Coins (real currency like the French or Swiss francs Mondo showed) or bullion is preferable to jewelry. You can also invest in a gold ETF (exchange-traded fund) like ETFS Physical Swiss Gold, which have had very good return rates (c. 10% this year) and save you the trouble of physically storing/securing gold yourself.
