The Tomb of Merire II
Sat Dec 17, 2011 01:48
112.198.81.176

The sequence is crystal clear in this tomb at Akhetaten.

King Akhenaten with Queen Nefertiti (AND NO SON!)
then
King Smenkhkare with Queen Meritaten (AND NO SON!)

The calcite jar from King Tutankhamun's tomb strongly suggests (but does not prove) Smenkhkare became king before Akhenaten's death, Year 16-17 at the latest. The other evidence from the Amarna letters shows that Meritaten was PHARAOH alongside a king of Egypt (EA 155). This can only be Smenkhkare based on the sequence in Merire II's tomb. You do not go from being the female co-pharaoh alongside King Akhenaten but then demoted to just queen alongside King Smenkhkare.

The Manethonian data is in perfect agreement with the above. It has

Horos
his daughter Achencheres
her brother Rathotis

and the same data may be set down as

Horos (Akhenaten)
his daughter Achencheres (Meritaten) and her brother Rathotis (Smenkhkare)

Meritaten and Smenkhkare were both kings of Egypt when Akhenaten died. Meritaten survived Smenkhkare and wrote to the Hittites for a husband because Tut was not her son, not her husband's son, and not her father's son.
