Hi Kim

Oops, wrong papyrus. I found what I was looking for after I already sent the mail.

Berlin P. 9784 is one papyrus with three consecutive transactions, not two transactions and then a summary.

lines 1-13
- dated year 27 of Amenhotep III
- records the purchase of two days of service each for two female slaves by the herder Mesi

lines 14-19
- dated year 2 of Amenhotep IV
- Mesi purchases a cow

lines 20-33
- dated year 3 of Amenhotep IV
- Mesi purchases two days of service for a female slave

I still say the idea that the first transaction on this single papyrus in line 1 is separated by 12+ years from the rest in lines 14-33 is unreasonable and outrageous. There should be transactions in between from the later years of Amenhotep III if there was no overlap. These are clearly consecutive year-dates with with only smalls gaps between them not 12+ years.

Below corrects Joe's post #4924 which greatly misrepresents Hayes' position in his 1951 papers in JNES with respect to the dated material at Malqatta palace in Thebes and at Amarna.

The five jars dated year 1 must belong to Amenhotep IV when the co-regency commenced. We can also see that Amarna was being prepared in year 28 of Amenhotep III. The junior co-regent was getting ready to establish his own administration at Amarna separate from that of his father. There was no co-regency anymore when Amenhotep IV moved to Amarna. This is now just overlapping reigns from his year 4 onward. The two jars dated year 8 at Malqata must belong to year 8 of Akhenaten or there is an unreasonable gap in the dated material at the Malqatta palace. The jar donated by Amenhotep IV when he was still crown prince came from the Middle Palace before the co-regency commenced.

Tory
