1627 - Thera Eruption and Venus Tablets

Hi All

The eruption of Thera did not create a celestial event but it could have created an atmospheric event which would have affected the observational visibility of Venus before it went into and after it came out of superior and inferior conjunctions. A Venus cycle of approximately 8 years map these conjunctions against the fixed stars (in the Gregorian calendar) but in the lunar Babylonian calendar, when coupled with the agricultural cycle, one Venus cycles take 56 and/or 64 years to complete (and after some 200 years they change to a different 56 and 64 year cycle). Given the data in the Venus Tablets, the allowable solutions for the accession year of Ammi-ṣaduqa are 1913, 1702, 1638, 1574 and 1419 BC. For a visual display of this, see my post
https://disc.yourwebapps.com/discussion.cgi?disc=177754;article=15300

Here I again give a pictorial representation of the 1638 BC which produces the best results, as seen in several past posts including
https://disc.yourwebapps.com/discussion.cgi?disc=177754;article=15299

Here the days Venus was astronomically invisible between 1637 and 1617 are shown in blue and orange and the days the Venus Tablets say Venus was invisible are shown in yellow and orange (the orange days are when both the astronomical calculations and the Venus Tablets agree). The Babylonian Venus data has been corrected as much as the textual variations will allow. Those days in blue show errors in the Babylonian data or observations because they represent days we know that Venus could not have been seen - yet despite this the Venus Tablets record that it was seen. Such results are mainly found in he later parts of the data (the data for 1621 is missing and the data for 1620-1617 is commonly thought to have been later calculations (so as to make the data cover the entire reign of Ammi-ṣaduqa).

What is more interesting is the days the Venus Tablets record that Venus was invisible when we know it should have been seen (yellow days). Such non reporting of Venus could be due to observational errors or atmospheric conditions, such as clouds, haze, dust storms, smoke from fires etc. These are short term conditions and they could explain most of the handful of yellow days before and after conjunctions. However in 1627 (and again in 1625 and even 1622) there are numerous yellow days before and after conjunction. Such prolonged conditions can arise from massive volcanic eruptions that throw up enormous amounts of matter into the atmosphere which can take months to dissipate. Hence the idea that the Venus data for 1627 (where some 50 Venus visible days either side of conjunction and recorded as Venus not being seen) reflects the eruption at Thera (with 1625 and even 1622 being secondary eruptions).
