JEA 88, correction, and Tefnakht

Dear Jean-Fred,

Thanks for the note, and even though I still hope my friends in Paris turn it up somewhere on St-Michel, I will be very happy to get copies from you should they fail.

I will be happy to see your new argument in favor of the reversed order (the one I "gave" you). You know that I am willing to change my mind if I could be convinced.

In my recent post to Fred (I hope he is reading these posts that end up buried back responses that follow), I wrote that the burial of Apis by Bakenranef was attested by several official and private stelae. This is incorrect, as official stelae were not set up until later. But there are several carved stelae attesting to this Apis burial, but only one graffito or ink-inscribed stela of Shabaqo allegedly in the same chamber (according to Mariette).

On Year 19 and Year 12 at Wadi-Gasus. In answering a post by Leo, Fred suggested that Year 12 could belong to Kashta instead of Piankhy as usually assumed. This is possible, and in that case we would have to attribute the Year 19 to Takelot III. But a reattribution could go the other way, and Morkot actually ascribes this Year 12 to Shabaqo, under whom Amenirdis I actually succeeded as God's Wife. This would mean that Year 19 belongs to a king who came to the throne in about 728 (using the conventional order and the Kahn chronology), and I can only think of Nimlot as a possibility (since he is attested in Piankhy's campaign of about 726 assuming 25 instead of 30 years for Piankhy). Perhaps if we have a particular Year of Shabaqo in which Amenirdis I is already attested as the God's Wife we could confirm or discount this hypothesis.

Fred, is the Great Chief of Ma Tefnakht statue published anywhere or is this something you are working on. Could you at least share the names and titles of his ancestors before you go to Egypt? And whose vizier is Baes, if we know?

Thanks, Ian
