Greg Wade: "Guys, please stop bitch-slapping each other in public. We all know that assigning absolute dates is controversial, that's the point of this forum. Sherry Foust asked a valid question which you have ignored and gone off at a complete tangent into your own little spat."

Sherry's question is fundamentally unanswerable because we cannot possibly know if there was a connection. The term "eclipse" in English can mean "overshadow" in another sense in that language but I hardly think it had the same double-meaning in Egyptian. We can suppose that eclipses were frightening happenings to the ancients or perhaps omens, depending upon the sophistication of the culture. It may even be that by the 18th Dynasty, the savants of the ruler knew that eclipses were nothing to fear and would pass as they had previously.

It is generally believed, upon certain information, that the usurpation of kingly titles by Hatshepsut took place in Year 7 of Thutmose III. This MAY be accounted for by the boy coming close to reaching the time of his life when he would no longer be in need of a regent with the royal lady then being loathe to relinquish whatever power she had. But nobody knows the truth there and it remains in the realm of conjecture.

As for Cullom, how do you think his "bitch-slapping" of the science of Egyptology in its entire duration should be answered? He is simply being unfair and, rather than admit that Manetho can have been in the dark about what went on in any era of Egyptian history, Cullom would rather invent a king "Thut-Hor", completely unattested within the 19th Dynasty. Do you believe he has a right to do this? I don't and neither would any reasonable person.

Hello Monkton, I did not invent a king Thuthor in the 19th dynasty. Manetho had a MAN with a Hellenized version of that name 60 years after Ramesses II and 26 years after Amenmesses. Before... more
