with the crate training, potty training and general puppy antics.
I know that even as a breeder when we were looking for a new German Shepherd for the family I went looking for a retired breeding dog, not for a cheaper price but for a mature dog past the puppy stage that was already done growing and ready to go for long walks and bike rides. If a breeder does their job right, a retired breeder shoudl be a well socialized dog ready to be a member of the family.
Sorry I dont' agree with trying to talk someone out of an adult in favour of a "cute young puppy they can grow up with" My first dog was 4 when I got him and I was 8 and we "grew up together " and he was my cherished companion until I graduated high school.

It's not necessarily about cost, it's the fact that we want a dog out of its puppy stage who is house trained & social. Puppies are a lot more work, and it's a phase we want to skip.
