I have done both. I am leaning toward Pennhip with my up and coming dogs since the finals are at a younger age. I had a final OFA and no Pennhip on the girl we just retired.
Please list your KENNEL name as there are too many multiples of the same names: i.e. Linda, Mary, etc. Although I much prefer PennHIP, I have a hard time finding males/females from OFA Certified... more
to test my dogs pennhip at closer to a year, will do a prelilm Pennhip if going into a g. home and then possibly redo at closer to a year........most of my dogs have both.
on all my dogs. I usually do both. I don't test earlier than 18 months (most are 20 months or older) some are over 2 and I never do prelims. So I don't usually redo OFA since I prelim so late. I have ... more
I do not do OFA finals, I rely on Penn Hip and my vet throws in the ofa prelim picture for free so it just costs the $30 to OFA. I once got a Penn Hip score of 30% and OFA good on one dog, and a 60%... more
when deciding on a hip evaluation. I have been told that even OFA readers, do not feel OFA is the way to go because they only see one view and they do not even know if anesthesia was used. With P/H,... more
anesthesia was used & what type- this is required to be filled out by the vet. I do OFA prelims and/or PennHip and then OFA finals. Holly http://www.fourpawsdoodranch.com

I do OFA prelims after a year old along with the elbows, and then do Pennhip a few months after that. The prelims give me an idea if I the dog is going to be a keeper and I can then proceed with any... more
Hi Joyce, I do OFA finals on all of my dogs, at minimum. I am open to, and see value in, P/H but have not done it so far. I have seen HUGE discrepancies between Dr. Wallace and OFA ratings on both... more
I was trying to get a list of breeders that OFA certify their dogs because so many JUST do a prelim OFA/Wallace and nothing else with hips (no BVA/P/H). I really prefer P/H but not many do that... more
I do both. I had one of my dogs that had prelim OFA of Fair and I retested for perm status and did PennHip and came back 80th percentile. They don't exactly test for the same thing so I am just extra ... more

I would also just like to say my experience tells me not to rely on OFA prelims, regardless of the score. I have had one girl go from Excellant prelim to Fair final. Another go from Good to Fair with ... more

I wait until 12 months at least. The ones I am doing now are 15 months. I just got back an OFA good on one of those and I would probably not do a final with a good at that age.

At this time I am in the process of doing some OFA finals. Most of my dogs have BVA scores. I recently had occasion to do an OFA final on one of my 4 year old dogs. The BVA score was 4 and at 4years... more
Do you not think that Pennhip offers the same sort of information? More detailed info on each hip, etc? I am just trying to understand the difference in BVA and Pennhip in that regard. Thanks!
