Hi Kayla, the short answer (IMO) is that you will make some money, some years--and you will lose thousands some years. The smaller your program the more difficult it will be to turn a profit. regardless how many litters you have per year there set expenses per year: registration fees, web site, whelping and puppy pens, etc. you can plan for your girls to go into heat every 10 months -- but there is a good chance that they might wait 18 months, or you might breed only to have 0 puppies-- or may have 14 puppies but they all need vet care--or the Mom needs a C-section. In my opinion, Don't Plan to Give Up Your Day Job for at least 5 years.

Zero! The expenses out weigh the profits when starting out. If you set it up properly with your accountant you may reap a tax benefit but you should expect little or no profit the first few years.... more

Yes, I have been breeding 6-7 years and I agree with everything Kendra has said. Take her advice seriously, she has not overstated the cost at all.
