To get the ball rolling...

I've got a small storm water holding pond out in front of our house. It kind of fulfills my desire to live on the shores of a lake... in a small way.

A few months ago several mallard ducks found the pond so I started to feed them. A local store carries feed for chickens and wild ducks so I would spread a coffee can of feed every day. One day I had 41 ducks on the pond. Most days it was anywhere from 5 to 15 ducks. One of the hens took a liking to the pond and its constant food supply. She hatched out 8 ducklings.

It was a kick to watch them grow up. Everyday I'd count them to be sure I hadn't lost one during the night to a coyote or raccoon. I did manage to save them from a Bald Eagle that swooped down toward the pond. I was talking to a neighbor when the Eagle made its dive and ran out to the pond shouting and waving my arms at the Eagle. I guess it figured out that it might be a good idea to look for an easier meal.

About 3 or 4 weeks ago the eight ducklings were fully grown and had learned to fly. They left and came back a few times for the free meal but left for good two weeks ago. One duck did come back but I think it was the mother.

Hopefully, the ducklngs will come back next year and raise chicks of their own....

The pond is almost completely dryed up now. Just 8 to 10 inches of water and weeds in it. Pretty soon I'll be mowing it instead of watching ducks in it.

Damn! Thanks John! I've been hoping someone would stop by and help get this going again. I'd try the same thing out here, but for the past few dry monsoon seasons the pond wouldn't get enough water... more

My right shoulder has "moderately severe" arthritis. Doc says as long as I can keep near full range of motion and control pain with over the counter drugs she doesn't recommend any surgical options.... more

When the arthritis got bad enough that even almost toxic doses of morphine every four hours wouldn't control the pain enough for me to pull on a shirt I figured it was time to get something done.... more
