The V/F Transition

The late 1980's were a rough time for the Savage Arms Company. And the Model 24's produced during this time sure reflect that turmoil.

While I have not encountered an exact duplicate of the configuration you described, sIt wouldn't surprise me if it was factory built.

I've begun referring to the guns produced in the late 80's as 24V/F Transition Models. Mostly because of the mixture of parts of both V and F found together on these guns and that it was the end of the 24V and start of the 24F models.

The 24V/F Transition Type I has V wood furniture, a V receiver, and an F barrel set. Another noticeable feature is the right side receiver engraving is a grouse and not a turkey like all other 24's. The rifle barrel is marked 24V and I have only ever seen .30-30 over 12ga.

The Type II is an F receiver, F barrel set, but wood furniture similar to that found on 24V series D models with serial numbers begining with the letter E. Rifle barrel is marked 24V and only .30-30 over 12ga. has been encountered.

Anthony - If you can will you send me an email so I can see about pictures and we can discuss more exact details of your gun. May make the list as a Type III. odell23(at)hotmail(dot)com

Thanks!

I agree with bigkelly. I'm no authority on them, as I only own older models, and someone like odell23 would surely know better...but from the guns I've known other guys to own, it sounds like you... more

Anthony I think what you have is an"F"--everything you describe matches to a "T" what my "F" has and none of my "V's" have any of those features

To take this discussion to the next logical step, I gotta know... If he dots his "I"s and crosses his "T"s on the identification, can he get a couple of "K" "PDQ"? Or, is he "SOL" and this is just a... more
