.357Max Details

Were you one of my college professors?? This looks like the "compare" without the "contrast". According to all of the Savage 24 data that I've been reading over a considerable number of years, I've never seen a .357Max/ any gauge!

Thanks for your comparison, but I was looking for "details". Without any formal data on savage 24.com, and other sources, I guess the .357Max is a wildcat round... or was initially. Who makes the round, and exactly what is the physical difference in the .357Mag and the .357Max? Does a Savage 24V chambered in .357Mag need to be modified to shoot the .357Max?

Surely, someone on here knows the complete history of the evolution of the .357Max? Just curious... guess I could just Google it. Thanks.

I thought I read a run down on the .357 Max/Maxi on here a few years ago, but can't find it anymore. Can anyone give us a refresher on the .357 Max details? Thanks.

To clarify some information by others in this thread. The Savage 24V Series D (for part of it's production run) had chamberings for both the .357 Smith & Wesson Magnum and .357 Remington Maximum.... more

The original gun chambered in the 357 MAX was the Ruger Blackhawk. It was made for the Silhouette game, where you shoot at iron targets at various ranges. There were IIRC a chicken at 50, pig maybe... more

Jeff-thanks for saying it in a way that I was incapable. Very well said. I especially agree with your encouragement to 'just get another gun, don't change a good thing'. I collect anything single... more

I have 19 Model 24's in every known combination. One is a 357 Max over 20 in electroless nickel. You do NOT want to be shooting a MAX in a magnum. First it won't chamber, and second if it were bored... more

adjudik8r, sounds like you've done a better job on Savage 24s than I have. I just have six, but I'm slowly working on it. I read the Wikipedia article you reference last night.... and many more... more

Like the post before me...you can chamber a 357 mag in a 357 max, but not the reverse, just like 38 special in a 357. The max is exactly the same diameter, but longer, so it will not chamber. Again,... more

I've read adjudiker's post and for the most part bow to his knowledge BUT I just miked the outside diameter of both my 357max and my 30-30 barrel sets and allowing for my cheap micrometer they seem... more

I bought the barrel from e-gunparts and it fits my 24V in 20/30-30's reciever. Its blue and 24".I think the nickle version is one of the rarest 24's around. Yes a 357 mag gun could be rechambered to... more

Thanks Big Kelly...is your barrel 20" or 24" long? I think I just answered my own question. I'm on two computers at the same time, and just saw the barrels that you speak about. It appears that the... more

Just spent some time on Google and found out the .357Max came in the Savage 24VS Series D. Quite an impressive pistol round down the Savage 24 barrel. The ones I found on Google seemed to have the... more
