There's folks here more knowledgable than me about selectors

And hopefully they will chime in soon to either confirm or correct what I'm saying, but I believe that if you're getting a hammer with selector it should work just fine on your 24 as long as it is for a 24 with a tang mounted action release. In other words there may be a (slightly)different hammer for either the side-lever action release or the front-of-trigger-guard action release, but if you order from Numrich-Gun Parts Corp and get a replacement hammer selector assembly listed and shown schematically for your type of action then it should work just fine.

However, some one here should also be able to give you some help as to what might be going wrong in your side-button selector system repair, and therefore you may be able to keep the gun original as you wanted to. Nothing wrong at all with making the upgrade to hammer-mounted, but also nothing wrong with continuing to try to restore the original system either.

I'm surprised that "know-it-all" Lee hasn't chimed in to tell you exactly how to fix it, to sell you a Model 42, and at the same time scam you out of your classic speciman of the 24. But rest assured there are plenty of other folks here who will be more than happy to help you without making a complete nuisance of themselves.
