Holiday Firsts – Part 2

Saturday, November 27, 2004 – 5:54am, San Francisco

Penny raised up when she felt the bed shift under the weight of somebody else. She looked up and saw Patti sitting on the side of her bed. Her daughter was slightly wet and shivering a little, but Patti seemed oblivious. Penny put a hand on her shoulder, “Patti? Darling?” Penny held her breath as Patti made no effort to answer her mother. Penny decided to try again, “Patti, where have you been? Sam and I were worried.”
“Walking,” Patti replied quietly.
Penny decided to try again, “Darling, who was on the phone? What has upset you so?”
Patti turned and locked eyes with her mother, “Paige. Paige was on the phone.”
Penny was taken aback for a moment, her brain trying to compute the facts, “You don’t mean . . . not Paige – not your Paige.”
Patti choked back a sob and smiled a bittersweet smile, “Yes, Mother – my Paige.”
Penny sat dumbfounded for a minute, then pulled Patti into a hug, “Oh, Patti. Darling, how?”
Patti shrugged, “I don’t know how she found me, but she did. Mother, it was Paige! My Paige!! After all these years . . . after all I went through to make sure . . . and how she got passed sealed records is beyond me!” Patti pulled back, tears rolling down her face, “Mother, what if he has the phone tapped? What if he knows? What if he’ll use that to find . . .”
Penny hugged her tightly again, “Honey, you’re giving him too much credit. He never was that bright and he never had that many connections. I was never really sure what you saw in him.”
Patti shook her head, “He wasn’t Victor. That was all I cared about at the moment, that he wasn’t Victor. And yes, he was one of the worst choices I ever made in my life, but he gave me two of the sweetest little angels.”
“And forced you to give them up,” Penny said bitterly.
“Don’t remind me!” Patti stood from the bed and started pacing slightly. “After all these years – after all this time, is it really possible they come back in my life?”
“They? You mean Pollux . . .”
Patti looked up, “I didn’t . . . I didn’t ask. We were both so stunned, neither of us said much. She just gave me her phone number and asked me to please call her when I felt I could talk.”
Penny inhaled, “Where is she?”
Patti shook her head, “New York City.”
“Well, we have to get her away from there.”
Patti laughed slightly, “I know – horrible isn’t it? God, I just want to hear her voice again.”
Penny grabbed the phone from the bedside table and extended it to Patti, “It’s almost nine there.”
“Mother, I couldn’t.”
“Yes, Darling. Yes you can. She gave you the number for a reason.”
Patti thought, “I was so shocked . . . she may have interpreted that as I didn’t want her . . . which is so far from true.”
Penny shook the phone lightly, “Don’t even try telling me you haven’t memorized the number.”
Patti took the phone. She dialed a few numbers, then stopped, hanging it back up, “I can’t.”
“Patti, you can. It’s just you and I sitting here. I convinced Sam to go to bed, even got him to take a sleeping pill. I knew you’d be back.”
Patti took a deep breath and started dialing once again.

New York City

Pollux grabbed the phone on the second ring and brought it to her ear automatically, “Matthews,” she sleepily answered. All the while Pollux was cursing to herself. Paige had crawled into bed with her right after she dozed off the first time, and she had just gotten herself back to sleep. There was silence on the other end of the line. Pollux groaned, “Hello?”
“Paige?” came the quiet question.
Pollux yawned and looked down at her sister who was finally sleeping. Pollux didn’t think that would ever be achieved last night. Paige had came into Pollux’s room, snuggled her back against Pollux’s side, and laid there quietly sniffing back tears. Pollux had thrown her arm over Paige and hugged her close, but she had a feeling that at the moment that was all Paige wanted. Now, only a short while later, the phone was for her. Pollux sighed, “I’m sorry, she can’t come to the phone right now, can I take a message?”
The phone was silent for a few moments, then Patti ventured her guess, “Pollux?”
“The one and only,” Pollux yawned. “Your message?”
Patti sat shocked, staring at her mother a moment. Penny urged her to continue. “Pollux, this is . . . this is your moth . . . this is Patricia Halliwell.”
Pollux’s eyes popped wide open and she pushed herself up in the bed. She took a few deep breaths, trying to figure out what to do. Finally she shook Paige. “Paige! Paige!” she hissed.
Paige rolled over, “What?” She watched her little sister extend the phone towards her, “Take a message.”
Pollux dropped the phone on the bed, “Take it yourself.” She rose from the bed and began pacing the room.
Paige growled and picked up the phone, “Hello?”
“Paige? It’s . . . it’s . . . I don’t know what you want to call me, yet.”
Paige shook her head, “Um, neither do I. Look, I’ve had time to think . . .” she watched her baby sister continuously pace the room, “I’m sorry I bothered you. You didn’t want . . .”
“But I do!” Patti was quick to interject.
“You do?” Paige said softly.
“Very much so, darling. It’s just . . . you . . . you caught me off guard and I didn’t expect . . . and . . . that’s why I’m calling you so early, I didn’t want you to think I didn’t want you . . . either of you. I want you both more than life itself, it’s just very complicated.”
“Really?” Paige asked hopefully.
“Really,” Patti confirmed.
Paige smiled to herself, “Hang on a minute, please.” She put the mouthpiece down and stared at Pollux, “Damn it, Pollux!! Quit pacing! Go get yourself a drink or something.”
Pollux shook her head, “What have you done?”
“What you should have,” Paige hissed back. “Now go get a beer or a vodka on the rocks or something that will calm you, come back in here, and sit on the bed. I won’t watch you pace the room anymore!”
Pollux walked to the dresser drawer, pulled out a pack of cigarettes, put one in her mouth, and lit it. She then sat on the bed, “How’s that?”
“Oh don’t even think you’re taking up that disgusting habit again. Now, behave.” Paige put the mouthpiece back to her mouth, “Sorry. Just a minor issue here.”
“Is she . . . is she okay?”
“She’s . . . she’s dealing like only she can.”
“I didn’t mean to upset her.”
“I know. Just like I know she doesn’t mean to be rude.” Paige rolled her eyes as Pollux gave her a ‘speak for yourself’ look. She then took a deep breath, “Are you . . . okay?” she asked cautiously.
Patti laughed, “Shocked . . . but in a good way. Once it wears off, I’m sure overjoyed won’t cover it.” She paused a moment, “I’ve waited so long to hear your voice.”
Paige smiled, “And I’ve waited a long time to hear yours.” Paige watched Pollux inhale smoke deeply, “Um, as much . . . as much as I’d like to continue this . . . Pollux worked like thirty seven straight hours and she’s only dozed over the last nine or so. Could we maybe . . . maybe do this a little later? I mean it’s early in San Francisco, and now that we both know we want each other . . . maybe it’s best we collect our thoughts, decide what we want to say.”
Patti sighed, a bit sadly, “You’re probably right.”
“Promise . . . promise when I call later you’ll answer.”
Patti smiled, “Oh yes. No question, I will answer. Now that I’m on my way to seeing you again, I’m not going to lose you.”
“You have no idea how much that means to me,” Paige cherished her mother’s words. “So, I’ll call you this afternoon?”
“I can call you – save your money.”
Paige laughed, “It’s okay. I started this, I would rather call you.”
“Paige, I’m the . . .”
“We’ll take turns,” Paige quickly suggested. “I called you. You called me. It’s my turn again.”
Patti exhaled, “Alright, turns it is. I’ll be home all afternoon. Call anytime. I’ll give you my cell number when you call back.”
“Sounds good. Goodbye.”
“Goodbye, Paige. I’ll talk to you soon.”
Paige waited until she heard the phone click on her mother’s end, then hung up her receiver. She glared at Pollux, “What was that all about?”
“Not ready to make nice,” Pollux shrugged.
Paige pulled the cigarette from Pollux’s mouth, put it out in the ashtray Pollux had retrieved from the nightstand, and pulled Pollux back down into the bed, “Sleep. We’ll talk later.”
“This is all going to end badly.”
“No, this is supposed to happen. I can feel it. Get some sleep, we’ll talk later.”
Pollux took a deep breath, closed her eyes, and tried to let sleep overtake her.

San Francisco

Penny looked at Patti, “Pollux?”
Patti nodded, “I’m not sure if she lives there or not, but she was there. She freaked when I told her who I was . . . forced the phone in Paige’s hands.”
Penny sighed, “These things take time.”
Patti nodded, “I just hope I haven’t screwed up for good. I haven’t seen Pollux since . . .”
“Pollux?” Sam’s voice drifted from the doorway, “Patti, is there something you need to tell me?”
