Holiday Firsts – Part 12

Saturday, December 04, 2004 – 10:32am, New York

“On behalf of your ATA flight crew, I’d like to welcome you to New York City where local time is 10:32am and local temperature is thirty-six degrees. We’d like to thank you . . .”
“Did he say thirty-six degrees?” Phoebe looked at Piper.
Piper nodded, “Oh yeah, he said thirty-six degrees.”
Patti smiled, “We’re in New York, not San Francisco, and its December.”
Phoebe shivered, “Oh this is not even cool.”
Prue smiled, “Actually it is, being only four degrees above freezing and all.”
Phoebe narrowed her eyes, “You are so not cute.”
Piper observed Patti taking a deep breath. She held her mother’s hand, “Okay?”
“Nervous.”
“Me too,” Phoebe admitted.
Prue nodded, “Do you think they’re as nervous as we are?”
“Hard to say.”

“Paige, the airport security came by – ask me to ask you to stop pacing before you wear a hole in the floor,” Pollux yawned from her uncomfortable seat.
“I’m sorry if I’m not as calm as some people,” Paige mumbled as she watched the arrival monitors. “There it is, Flight 224 from Chicago.”
Pollux nodded, “Can’t believe its Saturday already. Where the hell did Friday go?”
Paige shook her head, “You were playing with those new K’nex toys of yours and then you got a headache – because you haven’t slept since Thursday.”
Pollux shrugged, “Sounds right.”
“How was Drew when you went by the hospital after work?”
“Awake . . . weak . . . seemed happy to see me. I told him I would be back tonight.”
Paige nodded, “So you have tonight and tomorrow night off unless there’s some sort of break in the case, right?”
Pollux nodded, “Or unless somebody else gets shot or our short-handedness forces it.” Pollux noticed her sister’s face, “But they know how important and big this is – they’ll be considerate, I promise.”
Paige exhaled and sat in a seat next to Pollux, “They better.”
“They will.”
“Why can’t we get back to the gate again?”
“You know the answer to that question. Everybody in this city knows the answer to that question.”
“Can’t you use your badge to get us back there?” Paige said sarcastically.
Pollux rolled her eyes, “I could, but wouldn’t that really be unethical of me?”
“It’s not like I ask you to do it all the time.”
“No, but I can’t.”
“How many times have I watched you go out the door not knowing if you’ll ever come back or . . .”
“Patience is a virtue, Paige.”
“Oh you’re one to talk,” Paige shot.
Pollux exhaled, “I realize you’re stressed and getting more so each minute, but do you really want them to see a fight first thing?”
“No,” Paige sat back. After only a few minutes, she looked up on instinct, as if someone were willing her to do so. Her gaze fell upon four women coming towards them. Paige stood and took a step.
Pollux looked over, “Paige?”
“Paige?” Patti’s voice echoed Pollux’s and caught her youngest daughter’s attention.
“Mom?” Paige’s eyes welled up a bit.
Patti nodded, sat down her carry-on and held open her arms. Paige went immediately into them and held tight.
Piper smiled at the sight, as did Phoebe. Prue stood back a bit and Pollux stood from her chair. Patti looked over Paige’s shoulder and saw her youngest daughter, “Pollux?”
Pollux held up her right hand and waved her fingers weakly, “Hi.” Before anybody could say anything else, Pollux’s cell rang.
Paige whipped around, “No.”
Pollux sighed and pulled the phone from it’s clip, “Matthews.”
“She really does always answer the phone that way,” Prue mused.
“When? . . . Where? . . . You’re sure? . . . How many black and whites?”
“Black and whites?” Prue said softly. She hadn’t heard a conversation like that since . . . Andy. Prue looked confusedly at Paige, then to Pollux with realization.
Pollux nodded, “Right . . . right . . .” She checked her watch, “Ten minutes . . . Yes . . . See you there.” She hung up the phone.
Paige took a step towards her, “No!”
“I have to.”
“No, you don’t.”
“Anonymous call . . . somebody thinks they saw the sniper.”
“Anonymous call?!?! The last time you responded to one of those, you ended up in the hospital waiting for Drew to come out of surgery!”
“And this may be about that!”
“Two CSIs – two!!,/b> There have been two in a week. One didn’t make it! The other is in the hospital! Both responding to other calls! These are not coincidences!”
Pollux shook her head, “I have to go! I have to, Paige! It’s my job.”
“You better wear your vest,” Paige sighed in defeat.
“Promise,” Pollux said solemnly. She looked to her newfound Mother and sisters, “I’m sorry. I’ll see you later, I promise.” She looked back to Paige, “I have to take the car.”
“I know. I’ll arrange for a car. You had better be careful and you had better not be gone long!”
“Promise,” Pollux said again, smiled weakly, and ran through the airport.
Paige turned back to face her biological family, “So that was Pollux.”
Prue looked like she’d seen a ghost, “She’s a cop?” she managed weakly, barely audibly.
Paige nodded, “CSI . . . and still an officer. You can do that in New York. She’s also a trained sniper.”
Prue moved over to a seat and sat down slowly. Patti was right beside her, “It’s going to be okay.”
Prue shook her head, “This is not good.”
Paige looked over, “Um, is she okay?”
Patti ran a hand through Prue’s hair, “She’s going to be fine, Prue. She is.” Patti looked back towards Paige, “Prue’s husband was a Police Officer.”
Paige shook her head, “I didn’t know she was married.”
Piper sighed, “She’s a widow, actually.”
