SRAM Connectors
Mon Sep 22, 2014 11:03

Andy is exactly right. The front panel on the weapons pylons was extended on the FB-111A aircraft to accommodate the AGM-69A SRAM umbilical connector (which was about 4 inches in diameter), and the two airlines (one for cooling air in, and one for heated air out). There was also a mechanism to retract the umbilical from the SRAM during launch, as it dropped away from the pylon. Other side note, all bombs were carried using MAU-12 ejector racks, but the SRAM required the MAU-140 ejector rack instead of the MAU-12. For bomb loads, the harnesses and connectors were attached aft of the MAU-12, whereas the SRAM had this one connector forward of the MAU-140.

Why are the FB's pylons that edgy compared to those of the tactical versions ? And do they have the same connections as those ?

The FB-111's pylons had connectors for the SRAM (Short Range Attack Missile). The pylon was extended for this purpose.
