I think that one of the best things about Hetalia is that there are so many characters that it's hard not to find at least one you like. Even though some of them (like France) are somewhat shunned by the fandom they all have their redeeming qualities. Hetalia has always been my favorite canon to read fanfiction for because the series doesn't have much plot-wise, so there are endless things you could write about that don't go against canon. Also, a bit of a word of warning: watching the dub for the first time can be a bit too much for some people. Along with ridiculously stereotyped accents, the narrator is a bit less informative and a bit more ... out there.
