We were without phone, cell, internet for about 12 hrs after the fire took out the cell towers and microwave towers on the mountain above the ski area. Everything is back up - to stay? The National Guard is finally coming in - the Gov. took her own sweet time about dealing with this whole fire. There could be some political fall-out later on.
The big worry - after today's heartbreak - upward of 20 homes lost - is if the winds shift toward town. I hear that they would evacuate Upper Canyon first. I'm not seeing that - the fire is too far off, up around the ski area. But it has jumped Hwy 48 - looks like it took out one subdivision. They're not telling much. The smoke is horrible. (More on that). Everything from Ski Run Road to Nogal has been evacuated. This afternoon the winds were blowing in that direction.
There is very little "actual" smoke in town. It's killing my eyes, though. It is blowing, like a chimney through a couple ridges over from me - and into the Valley. I went down to check on the parents' earlier today. The sky looked like a thunderstorm is coming in. Naturally, my mother isn't allowed to step foot out of the house.
The smoke continues until you get up toward Fox Cave, then it looks like the "distant" fire that it is.
They are expecting this thing to be bad. I don't think we've begun to know how many homes have been lost. Unfortunately, the way it's burning, it's heading right into subdivisions.
They're setting up the incident headquarters at the ranger station there on Meecham. That's always fascinating to watch. I went up to Lawrences' about 7 this evening. As I drove back toward Suddreth reinforcements were coming in.
I think it's more than bad. The last I heard, it is about 5 miles from Capitan. Rumordoso is out is full force! At least 25 homes are gone. I have a friend who got out with her cats and that was it.... more

She is a horrible governor, and I voted for her. Won't make that mistake again. I've been on the phone for an hour, with someone who has been on the phone most of the afternoon. This is a political... more
is blowing it big time. I thought I read on either KOB or KRQE that there were slurry planes there but they had to be grounded because of the winds. Regardless, it doesn't sound good for the gov.... more
