As part of my ongoing research on Bear River Tom Smith, I try to keep my eye out for info on Smith's known associates. One of them was an Irishman called Pony Spencer. He was little more than a kid,... more

Bob DeArment in his book Bravo of the Brazos: John Larn of Fort Griffin, Texas wrote "Pony" Spencer may have been Lark Ferguson, a Texas desperado who as "Pete Spence" or "Peter Spencer" later became ... more

I assume by your reference to New Mexico, you have the 1907 Outing Magazine article featuring Pony. The only other reference I know of is the Fort Griffin vigilante notice that listed "Pony Spencer"... more

These comments help. I'm surprised that I missed the suggestion that Pony Spencer might have been Pete Spence. I'll have to dig out the Larn bio and check out the reasoning. The Fort Griffin... more

Gary, I looked at a list of inmates incarcerated at Santa Fe in 1885. Sure enough, there was Charles Ray (39). But the inmate Charles Spencer was only 26 years old. Not our boy - should have been... more

This is important to have. It also means that we have to be cautious when dealing with Pony Spencer in New Mexico. I wasn't surprised to have to deal with two (actually many more)Tom Smiths, but two... more
