Resigning from the Dodge City police force on August 11, 1876, Bat Masterson hightails it for Cheyenne, one major gateway to the Black Hills. Hitting a hot steak gambling Bat remains there learning the lay of the land. After a few days he sees "Dublin" grabbing headline news:

Latest From The Hills.
"Dublin" Lyons arrived here yesterday afternoon direct from Deadwood, where he has been for the last two months. He brought with him $3,500 in gold dust, which was put up in small packages for distribution to a dozen different parties. Mr. Lyons has lost none of his faith in the Hills.... He came through with one companion, and saw no Indians during the trip..... Lyons says every man in the Hills has his "buckskin bag of gold" in hos pocket, and that gold is the sole currency of the country, greenbacks being as scarce as hen's teeth."

After five weeks in Cheyenne Bat hopped the eastbound for 100 miles to Sidney - "the Hell Hole" - for a rendezvous with Morg and Wyatt.
