Jim Anderson's Almond Dance Hall at the corner of 3rd and Almond was a virtual epicenter for the red-light district of bagnios on Almond Street where shootings, stabbings, assaults, and robberies frequently occurred along with prostitution and general drunkenness. For example, a man named Charley Gallagher was shot at Anderson's dance hall (May 1874), fiddler Bill Irving was cut in an Almond dance hall (August 1874), and James Timmonds was robbed at a "disreputable house on Third and Almond Streets" by two men and a woman named "Scotch Mollie," an inmate of the bagnio.
