Since you have no idea what the school is all about...

...then you really shouldn't comment.

The school is all about "citizen-soldiers". People who are just as capable of serving their community, as serving in the military. People who can drop their civilian pursuits in time of war to take up the sword. Like someone in 2017 who has a civilian job, but also serves in the National Guard in case the State or Nation needs military men.

It's exemplified in the inscription on the parapet, which every Cadet memorizes. I remember it to this day, almost 35 years after graduating:

"The healthful pleasant abode of a crowd or honorable youths, pressing up the hill of science with noble emulation, a gratifying spectacle, an honor to our country and to our state, objects of honest pride to their instructors and fair specimens of citizen soldiers, attached to their native state and proud of her fame, and ready in every time of deepest peril to vindicate her honor and defend her rights - Colonel JTL Preston"

Colonel Preston was one of the founders of the Institute and (oh the horrors) served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Confederate Army.

The Cadets who fought and died in the Battle of New market are remembered every year.

Every year the New Cadets recreate the charge of the Corps of Cadets at New Market to instill in them their sense of duty and service before receiving the shoulder boards of a VMI Cadet.

Every Cadet sits before a huge painting of the charge at every single meeting of the Corps in Jackson Hall, the Cadet Chapel named for (oh the horrors) Stonewall Jackson.

To the ignorant, these monuments and ceremonies may seem silly. But it's what the school is all about. It's the schools foundation.

But they do an incredible about of GOOD in developing fine young men and women with an appreciation of what it means to sacrifice and serve the greater good.

And, most importantly, as I've stated numerous times with NO rebuttal -- not one single person's life will be IMPROVED by removing them.
