What Is And What Is Not...

The flag can be grabbed by a madman, waved about in support of whatever cause he cherishes, claimed and sullied. It has happened before, it will happen again. Likewise the others. Even the written words age and lose their essential context and power with time. Look no further than the establishment clause - powerful and clear in its day, but barely understood by a minimal few in ours.

None of those are sacred. To hold them as such is to hold ourselves hostage to the whims of demagogues who are not afraid to grasp these powerful items and turn them into weapons for their unjust causes. This is the key to understanding at a later date, How could this have happened? How could good men and women let something so evil transpire?

On the other hand, the concepts, the ideas, and the ideals that form the foundations that everything else must rest upon... those are the only things due veneration in this context. They are the purpose to which laws are written - and when flaws are discovered in those laws, it is the laws that must be discarded. When weakness is discovered in the nation that has boldly set these ideals as its goals, it is the weakness that must be acknowledged and treated - not ignored or obscured by the waving of "sacred" flags, drowned out by the singing of "sacred" anthems.

There is work to be done.
