I think it's because crowd shootings are typically random

and it puts fear in the hearts of people so they worry that when they are just out enjoying life, minding their own business, some whacked nut job might open fire on them out of the blue, without warning in a place normally seen as "safe" from criminals, drug addled people, and random opportunistic robberies & murders. There is NO way for them to predict or protect against the kind of mass shooting like Las Vegas.

All those single and double shootings are not as well publicized but are also situations where many folks assume that the "kind of people" involved automatically leaves them out of being a likely victim -- they must be drug addicts, dealers, prostitutes, criminals, reckless people, or unfortunate, poor folks living I dangerous ghettos -- People who are not careful or haven't any other options. Decidedly not THEM.

Thus, it doesn't strike the same fear in folks when they can reasonably be safe if they avoid those types of places & situations, while the random shootings are unpredictable and there is NO "protection" if one ever leaves their house.
