I think familiarity breeds contempt as well..

IMO when it comes to the random nature of such events, it makes it harder to defend against. IMO if we were to ask the average person, they could name 4 or 5 steps to avoid being the victim of a 'routine' type crime right off the top of their heads... Things like don't go to this particular park after dark. Lock your doors. Be home by 11pm. Don't go to this part of town. Don't flip people off on the road... etc. etc. etc...

So, IMO we have a pretty good idea (whether we apply it or not) as to tools we can use to REDUCE our risk of becoming a victim in a 'routine' type crime. It gives a sense of having at least SOME degree of control.

But with the random events, it is much harder to come up with preventative measures.
