The problem here is that Trump doesn't know how to sincerely apologize.

He was put in a position where he needed to apologize and he needed to be sincere. He wasn't apologizing for anything he had directly done, himself, but he had to express remorse over the situation.

Someone with social awareness and empathy takes on themselves as much of the burden of the exchange as possible, no matter how uncomfortable it is. Even though the fault is not yours, you say, "I'm so sorry. I can't imagine how awful your loss is. We'll do everything we can to help your family in any way we can."

Trump had to distance himself from the responsibility. From the losing. From any possible hint that he might be at fault.

It's who he is. It's who he has been from the beginning.

He's unfit to hold office.
